Year 8 Girls Sportshall Athletics Success

The Winston Y8 Girls Sportshall Athletics Team recently competed in the P&G Surrey Games County finals and came away champions!!!  Millie Cave, Paige Hewitt, Ellie Sharpe, Lucie Scuse, Victory Ogbuike, Sarah Bindschedler, Charlotte Gray and Katie Warren dug in deep, and pulled together to come away victorious!  Competing at Guildford Spectrum on Tuesday 12th March, the team were involved in several individual and team running events, as well as field events such as the shot putt, standing long jump, vertical jump and the triple jump.  The team achieved a grand total of 194pts, just beating there closest competitor, Ashcombe School, by 1pt.  The girls now progress onto the South East Regional stage at Surrey Sports Park on Thursday 28th March, where they will face some tough competition.  They are extremely determined to succeed, and I wish them the best of luck for the final.  Fingers crossed they will experience another thoroughly enjoyable event and come away with another well-deserved medal!

Good Luck Girls,

Year 8’s Run a River…in the gym

During the month of March every student in year 8 is spending a morning tutor session in the gym.  Their challenge is to (quite literally) run the length of one of Europe’s 10 longest rivers, the shortest of the 10 being the 1,430 Km long River Belaya in Russia. Their efforst to date has been fantastic, at time of writing the record achievement is held by 8MCS who covered over 113Km in less than an hour by running, rowing & cycling!

In addition 50 students will be participating overnight during our 24 hour river run on March the 22nd.  Parents, friends & families are asked to sponsor the students in order to raise money for  the students nominated charity, Woking Hospice. Please dig deep and support us!

Netball Success for Year 10 Girls

Our Year 10 Netball team recently competed in the East of England round of the National Sports College Netball tournament at Copleston High School, Ipswich, after qualifying in the South East Stages before Christmas.  The girls displayed outstanding ball skills, and excellent drive and determination to win in all of their games.  They proudly finished 2nd and were thrilled to be awarded their well-deserved medals.  This is a fantastic achievement for the Year 10 team competing in an U16 competition.  The girls progress through to the National FINALS at the end of March in Cambridge.

I’m very proud of all the girls and I wish them the best of luck in the FINALS!

The NYMT has been described by Andrew Lloyd Webber as ‘the best youth music theatre in the world’  Previous students of the NYMT include Jude Law, Eddie Redmayne, Sheridan Smith and Matt Lucas.

Ellie auditioned in competition with students from all over the UK. Her achievement is all the greater as the age for qualifying for the NYMT is from 11-23.

Whistle DownThe Wind’ is being performed between July 22nd and 28th at the Rose Theatre in Kingston.

Simon Donaldson, Head of Drama at Winston Churchill School said,   We are all incredibly proud of Ellie for this wonderful achievement. She is a remarkable young actress with great charisma and flair. Her performance as ‘Annie’ in our recent School production was both breath taking and commanding for someone so young and I am sure she will prove to be a huge success at the NYMT.”

Ski Trip 2013

45 students took part in the ski and snowboarding trip to Austria during the half term break. A fantastic time was had by students and staff even though the Austrian medical services were well used by our group. Our students were praised by the instructors who commented on their politeness, responsiveness and great sense of humour.

Please see below for an account of the visit written by Alice Wilmott, year 10 student at the school.
